SHILLONG: Manipur Governor Najma Heptulla has called for proper demarcated and fenced border with Myanmar to prevent drugs and arms smuggling into the state.
Speaking on the second day of the 67th Plenary of the North Eastern Council in the city on Tuesday, Heptulla said Manipur has a 398 km unfenced border with Myanmar and the porous border is allowing drugs and arms smuggling from Bangladesh and Myanmar to Manipur, “which is harming our society”. “They are bringing in different ideology but here in India we all live as Indians… Both India and Myanmar should work and have a strategy together and there should be a proper demarcated and clearly identified border,” she added. Heptulla also said the seven sisters of the North East need more caring while Assam is the big brother. Talking to media persons here on Tuesday, she said the population of entire Manipur is around 28 lakhs whereas the same population lives in Guwahati city. “We are a hilly area, we have no mineral resource,” she said while lamenting that Manipur has been suffered from insurgency.
