Uses of illegal substances in water bodies prohibited

JOWAI: The West Jaintia HIlls District Magistrate has under Section 144 Cr.PC prohibited any person, organisations and others from indulging in or resorting to the act of poisoning of rivers, streams or any other water bodies with the explicit or implicit intention to cause wide spread large destruction of aquatic life within the District. 
The District Magistrate also prohibits stone, sand quarrying and washing of vehicles at the rivers bank, streams and any water bodies. The order was promulgated as it was brought to the notice of the District Magistrate that large scale of poisoning rivers, streams and other water bodies has been taking place and these have resulted in large scale extermination of fishes other living organism, and moreover using of toxins and poisons in the rivers and streams can pose a serious hazard to human life and to fauna alike. 
Poisoning of water bodies has also affected in huge economic loss to local economy and population since short-term gains of the few unscrupulous elements has upset the long term economic interest and well-being of the people.
