World Population day celebrated

NONGSTOIN/ Jowai: World Population Day was celebrated on July 11 at Bishop Hall, Nongstoin which was organised by the office of the District Medical & Health Officer Nongstoin. M.Kharbhih, District Social Welfare Officer West Khasi Hills was the Chief Guest.
Speaking as the Chief Guest Kharbhih stressed on the importance of family planning and highlighted the problems and issues of having an unplanned family. She also informed the gathering about Women’s Reproductive Rights.
 Dr.W.W.Phira DM&HO informed that the district has the highest Total Fertility Rate so initiatives are being taken up at all possible levels to tackle the issue and of which 2018’s World Population Day ASHAs from every block were invited to attend the programme so that they will be more proficient and confident in managing various issues on family planning. 
 The programme was also attended by Medical Health Officer, staffs of Nongstoin Civil Hospital among others.
Meanwhile in Jowai, World Population Fortnight was  launched  in West Jaintia Hills District with  the theme,” Bright Future Begins with Welfare of a Family” which was organised by the District Health Society, West Jaintia Hills in collaboration with Dr. Norman Tunnel Hospital, Jowai .
West Jaintia Hills Deputy Commissioner cum chairperson of the District Health Society R Rapthap grace the event as Chief Guest. 
 In his speech the DC, said rapid growth of population not only lead to shortage of food, employment and other issues but also affects the course of development in the District and state as a whole.
