Telangana ex-cop interacts with city students
SHILLONG: Super-cop turned educationist, R.S.Praveen Kumar, Telangana attended an interaction programme held on Monday at the State Convention Center, Pine Wood Hotel, Shillong. The event also screened Poorna, the true story of the youngest girl in history to climb Mt Everest who was mentored by Kumar. The 13-year-old girl belonging to a tribal community was a student of the government residential school. The movie was produced and directed by Bollywood actor Rahul Bose, who also played the role of the IPS officer in the movie. Kumar’s initiative in supporting children from marginalised groups, Scheduled Tribe, Scheduled Caste and Dalits in Telangana won the hearts of an emotional packed house of school children, school heads and principals from several city institutions. Students of Pine Mount School welcomed the guests with the rendition of Khasi, Garo and Jaintia folk songs. The programme was organised and hosted by Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan, State Education Mission Authority of Meghalaya.
Tura diocesan youth panel holds meet
Tura: The general body meeting of Diocesan Youth Commission (DYC), Tura Diocese was held at Mini Pastoral Centre, Tura from July 12-15. The meeting was held to plan the annual programme. The programme began with the inaugural mass by Bishop Andrew R. Marak, the DYC Chairman and key note address was delivered by Fr. Theodore T. Sangma, the former director. 40 parishes took part and presented the annual report for 2017- 2018. Good Shepherd Church, Chapahati bagged the best report of the year. Games and singing competitions were also conducted.
Fitment of sound limiters to audio systems
NONGPOH: The Deputy Commissioner, Ri Bhoi District, Nongpoh has instructed all service providers renting out audio system in Ri Bhoi district to fit the system with sound limiters to limit emission of sound to the permissible decibel and are subjected to inspection by police officials and State Pollution Control Board as per law. The same is also applicable for all government and political functions as well. Shop owners dealing with public audio systems will not be permitted to sell instruments without sound limiters as a compulsory accessory.
Use of party poppers banned
NONGPOH: The Deputy Commissioner, Ri Bhoi District, Nongpoh has informed that party poppers has been banned except those which uses compressed air as the charge material and soft popper as streamers. Party poppers are commonly used at parties and are generally charged with explosives which are activated by pulling a string. The charge blows out coloured plastic glitters and makes a popping sound. The glitter and other charged chemicals are harmful to human health and environment. They get mixed with food items and may also cause severe eye trauma or other facial injuries.
Rally against minor’s murder
SHILLONG: As a mark of protest against the recent attempted rape and murder of a 14-year old minor, the Joint Action Committee of Seng Samla Shnong Mawmaram & KSU, Mawmaram Unit, along with the Dorbar Shnong Mawmaram & Mawsawa Umdiengshit and the HYC Nongthliew Circle will organise a public rally on July 18. The public rally will start from NH bridge, Mawsawa and culminate at Mawmaram village ground. The rally is also organised to pressure the government to book the accused in the murder of the 14 year old under stringent sections of law. At the same time, there will be a candle light vigil at Station Mawmaram in the evening.
Storytelling workshop held
SHILLONG: A three-day storytelling workshop was held at North East Slow Food & Agrobiodiversity Society (NESFAS) on July 13, 14 and 16. The workshop is aimed at identifying young local talents who are interested in storytelling. The first two days anchored around tea-time stories, a session aimed at discovering bridge between heritage in farming villages and current lifestyles. The workshop involved the participants in identifying and using their own ways of documenting and sharing “archives of the local land, life, resources and culture.” They came up with ideas for targeting issues on the local weaving sector, Khasi traditional food and games, ethno medicine and cultural relations, and many wider range of topics surrounding the region.
Assessment camp for PWDs
TURA: The assessment camp for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) under ADIP scheme for South Garo Hills District was held on Monday at Rangku Memorial Girls Secondary School in Baghmara. The programme was organised by Commissioner for persons with disabilities in collaboration with the District Social Welfare Officer, State Resource Centre on Disabilities Affairs and Artificial Limbs Manufacturing Corporation of India (ALMCO), Kanpur where more than hundred persons with disabilities from all four blocks of South Garo Hills District attended and registered themselves in the campaign. During the assessment camp, the disabled were categorised into four groups and accordingly examined by experts. It may also be mentioned that those disabled persons who have attended and registered themselves will be provided with various aids and franchise.
Promotion of rural tourism
NONGSTOIN: A one-day workshop cum awareness programme for promotion and development of rural tourism through Cooperative Societies was held on Monday at Nongkasen Community Hall, Nongkasen under West Khasi Hills district. It was attended by the local SHGs, NGOs and residents. The objective of the workshop is to encourage and to create awareness among the villages to opt for rural tourism for improving the economic and social aspiration through a general democratic control enterprise. Managing Director, Meghalaya Village Development and Promotion Tourism Co-op Society Ltd. Shillong, R. Kharmujai cited an example of co-op societies of other villages which had flourished by adopting rural tourism as their means of livelihood.
