NEW DELHI: AICC president Rahul Gandhi on Thursday kept his promise and appointed Szarita Laitphlang of Congress as regional coordinator of All India Professional Congress (AIPC), East Zone in place of MP, Gaurav Gogoi.
AIPC is the professional wing of Congress and India’s first political platform focused on the needs and aspirations of working professionals and entrepreneurs in the country.
The idea of AIPC germinated from the assessment that professionals in today’s India are disconnected from politics, a starkly different situation from the first couple of decades after India’s independence.
While renowned Congress leader, Shashi Tharroor is the chairman of AIPC, youth leader from Mumbai, Milind Deora, is its vice-chairman.
AIPC has four zones in four parts of the country
and the eastern zone comprising as many as 13 states including the whole of North East, will be headed by Szarita.
Szarita was the member of the Congress manifesto committee in Meghalaya before the Assembly polls in the state.
She also held several important positions in the state Congres and was featured in the autobiography of AICC leader Rahul Gandhi, Rahul.
Only recently, addressing a meeting of the AIPC, Rahul had said that some of its members would be accorded nominated positions in the party in the near future.
He also said that the party intended to bring in fresh faces for newer ideas and renewed energy into the organisation while accommodating senior talent as well.
The immediate task of the reconstituted AIPC will be to give inputs for the party manifesto for the 2019 general elections.
It also has to come out with massive support for the next big fight, party sources said.
