Over 200-kg cannabis seized at Agartala Airport
Agartala: Over 200 kg of cannabis was seized at the Agartala Airport from a consignment of pineapples which was being sent to Dubai, police said on Monday. The cannabis were seized from the pineapple consignment to Dubai at the airport here, Assistant Inspector General (AIG), Smriti Ranjan Das said. Das said 22 large boxes of pineapples were ready to be loaded as air cargo of an aircraft yesterday. Security check of the cargo revealed hidden cannabis inside the load of pineapples. “The Airports Authority of India (AAI) and the airline authorities immediately informed the police and Enforcement Branch. Subsequently, 22 packets of cannabis were recovered from 22 boxes of pineapple,” the senior police officer said. He said the entire seized cannabis weighed 226 kg. Police arrested a man from the airport after the cannabis was seized from the pineapple consignment. (PTI)
Mizoram man gets 12 years in jail for raping minor
Aizawl: A special court here sentenced a man to 12 years of imprisonment for raping a minor girl. The special judge of (POCSO) court on Friday sentenced Lalruatsanga of Chawlhhmun locality in Aizawl to 12 years of imprisonment for raping the girl last year. The court has also imposed a fine of Rs 20,000. It also instructed the Aizawl Legal Services Authority to provide compensation to the victim under the provisions of Mizoram Victims of Crime Compensation Scheme, 2011. (PTI)
Govt brings bill in LS for sports university in Manipur
New Delhi: The government on Monday moved a bill in the Lok Sabha to establish a specialised sports university in Manipur to promote various aspects of sports such as management, technology and coaching. The National Sports University Bill, 2018, introduced by Sports Minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, will replace the ordinance promulgated by the President on May 31. Before the introduction of the bill, the minister withdrew a 2017 bill regarding the Manipur university from the House. The 2018 bill seeks to “establish and incorporate a National Sports University in the State of Manipur, a specialised University first of its kind, to promote sports education in the areas of sports sciences, sports technology, sports management and sports coaching…”. Besides, the proposed university would also function as the national training centre for select sports disciplines by adopting best international practices and for matters connected therewith or incidental thereto. “Apart from academic programmes and research, the university and its Outlying Campuses’ will also impart training to elite athletes, sports officials, referees, and umpires and evolve as centres of excellence in the various discipline of sports,” said the statement of objects and reasons of the bill. In order to make the university a world-class institution, the government had signed an agreement with two Australian universities — University of Canberra and Victoria University — for development of curriculum, research facilities, and laboratories, among others (PTI)
