SHILLONG: Personal enmity seems to be the reason behind suspended Meghalaya Civil Service Officer and former BDO of Jirang Grandwill Harly Passah allegedly sponsoring the attack on the secretary of MPSC, WAM Booth.
However, Passah denied the charge that he sponsored the attack when police quizzed him after his arrest on Wednesday.
Initially, police arrested four persons, including two youths who were directly involved in throwing a petrol bomb at the office of the MPSC secretary.
Among the four, one used his vehicle to ferry the two youths after the petrol bomb attack while another person handed over Rs 18,000 each as reward.
According to police, Passah gave Rs 50,000 to carry out the attack.
Passah surrendered on Wednesday night at Lumdiengjri PS and was taken to Sadar police station for interrogation. The officer was produced before the court on Thursday and police had sought custody of the accused for a few days.
Passah was earlier arrested by a Special Investigation Team of Shillong police headed by former SP (City) Vivek Syiem for abetment in the ‘suicide case’ of late Patharkhmah officer-in charge PJ Marbaniang.
The MPSC secretary is the wife of Syiem.
However, the case related to Marbaniang is pending in the Supreme Court as the suicide angle was challenged. ) When contacted, East Khasi Hills SP Davis Marak said one of the four persons arrested earlier had confessed that he was asked by the MCS officer to commit the crime.
Marak also added that one of the accused persons who was arrested earlier had confessed that they were threatened by a person not to reveal anybody’s name to the police.
The person who threatened them was the driver of the MCS officer’s sister.
Marak also said the case is more or less solved and “police just need to question the arrested officer thoroughly for further clarity on the matter”.
Passah has been remanded in police custody for seven days.
