GUWAHATI: The nervousness and uncertainty till 10am on Monday morning made way for relief among many whose names did not figure in the part draft NRC published seven months back.

Thankfully, apart from personally visiting the 2500 NRC Seva Kendras (NSKs) across Assam, there were four other modes, including online, texts, help lines, through which applicants could confirm their names in the complete draft NRC.

As such, most of the NSKs witnessed a smooth flow of people who visited them to confirm their names in the draft.

Former Dhubri MLA from BJP, Dhruba Kumar Sen, who was anxiously awaiting a positive result after five members of his family did not figure in the part draft, was a relieved man on Monday afternoon.

“It’s a big relief to find all the names of the members who were not included in the part draft. I’m sure there were minor rectifications that had to be done upon verification. I am happy that the uncertainty is finally over and would like to commend the officials engaged in the process for a job well done,” Sen, who served for a term as a legislator from 1991, told The Shillong Times on Monday.

Like Sen, many others whose names did not figure in the part draft, breathed better by noon.

Nilesh Barman and Mrinmoy Adhikari of Gauripur, about 10km away from Dhubri, too were all smiles. Both found the names of all their family members in the complete NRC draft.

“There were some issues regarding the birthplace of my mother and daughter, who were born in Bengal. Besides, the names of my wife and brother did not feature in the first draft. But today, I am happy to find their names after the confirmation was made online,” Barman said.

Mrinmoy, a businessman, was elated with the positive result. “My name and those of my two children did not appear in the part draft. But now we are more than contented to find our names. However, the number of those excluded in the draft is staggering. I am sure in due course all genuine citizens would be included upon verification of their claims,” he said.

The forms for claims will be made available at the NRC Seva Kendras across the state and also available for downloading from www.nrcassam.nic.in from August 7. The NRC authorities will receive the forms from August 30 to September 28.The final NRC will be updated after all claims and objections are resolved.

Calm at NSKs too

Officials engaged in the NRC update process were also relieved, firstly because the complete draft is now out and also that going was smooth at the NRC Seva Kendras from 10am this morning.

The ambience at the NSK-7 inside the veterinary office premises in the Chenikuthi area here, was quiet and smooth as only a couple of persons were seen checking their presence in the draft around 11am.

“Over 11,500 people had applied at the NSK here and believe that almost 90 per cent of the applicants will find their names in the complete draft. The flow of people so far has been steady,” an official at the NSK told this correspondent.

Expressing relief, he said that, “We are glad to be part of a historic process for which have worked with sincerity and dedication over the past three-four years. The process however has not ended and will continue till the final NRC is out.”

Similar reactions from relieved officials across the state were also noticed.

NSKs across the city witnessed a steady flow in the morning with no untoward incident reported till afternoon.

“There was no stone unturned by the NRC authorities to facilitate a smooth check, be it offline or online. Their efforts have to be lauded,” said a resident here.
