SHILLONG: The state government is open to carrying out an NRC-like exercise in Meghalaya, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong has said.
Talking to media persons here on Monday after a meeting with a delegation of HYC members, Tynsong reiterated that the matter has been referred to the Political Department.
“Let the Political Department come up with a Cabinet memo before the Cabinet. We will then deliberate on the issue before taking a final decision whether an NRC-like exercise can be adopted in the state,” he said.
Several pressure groups in the state have been demanding an NRC-like exercise with 1971 as the cut-off year.
Tynsong said the government has received a number of memoranda from pressure groups and political parties on the issue and maintained that “it is a totally new concept” for it.
The deputy chief minister added that the government would ensure that “the interest of all citizens of the state is protected”.
