SHILLONG: The State Planning Board would roll out a new programme of Pla and Sla by the end of this month and the initiative is expected to slowly phase out the use of plastic bags in the city.
Meghalaya State Planning Board expert member, Naba Bhattacharjee said that the full Board which here on Friday discussed at length on the concept of phasing out plastics with the Pla and Sla which would boost rural economy and Self Help Groups and Women organizations will be asked to prepare the Pla and Sla
It may be mentioned that sla (leaves) are in abundance in the state which can be put to use and these will be supplied to shopkeepers
It was also informed that shopkeepers will be given sufficient time to stop the use of plastics and move on to the concept of sla and pla.
With the roll out of the scheme, the government is contemplating to ban the use of plastic and the Board also intends to set up a unit where all old clothes like Jainsem and others will be collected to make Pla.
Meanwhile, the Board on August 17 will also meet the departmental heads to discuss about their functioning and discussing about department wise policies.
