Electoral literacy club launched
SHILLONG: The Electoral Literacy Club (ELC) was recently launched by Meghalaya Chief Electoral Officer FR Kharkongor during a programme held at the Ferrando Speech & Hearing Centre in Umniuh Khwan, RiBhoi. Ri Bhoi District Commissioner RM Kurbah, Addl CEO T Lyngwa were also present during the event along with the principal of the institute and the students of St. Fernando. Kharkongor emphasized on 2018 being declared as the ‘year of accessible elections’ with special focus on free, fair and inclusive elections with no voter left behind.
Graduation day held at Nongstoin College
NONGSTOIN: The 4th College Graduation day 2018 was held at Nongstoin College on Monday in the presence of Education Minister and chief guest Lakmen Rymbui, guest of honour Setsing Dkhar, principal I Nongthoh, former principal BK Laitflang, college staff and students. The Education Minister also felicitated three students who had achieved 1st class grades from the Khasi and Sociology departments and presented them with mementos and cash. Two associate professors of the college – Holding Stone Kharbani and Sanbok Marthong were also awarded for their services. The Nongstoin Youth Welfare Organisation (NYWO) as the sponsoring body of the college, awarded three members of the sponsoring body – NS Nongrem, Ispilbinis Syiem and W.J.Dkhar.
Man dies of wrong treatment
SHILLONG: A person died in Ri Bhoi district after he was allegedly administered an injection by a pharmacist. The In-charge of Pillangkata Outpost reported that on August 9, Khoim Uddin Ali complained of stomach pain and went to a pharmacy at Umtyrnga village.There a pharmacist identified as Bohirul Ali administered him with an injection after which the patient complained of severe pain and died while he was being shifted to Guwahati Medical College.
Foundation day at Lepers’ colony
TURA: The 4th Foundation Day of the Toksan Area Level Federation – a ‘self help group’ (SHG) under Rongram C&RD Block – was celebrated at Leprosy Colony in Tura recently. DRDA District Project Manager, Tura Rakseng R Marak attended the event as the chief guest along with former ANVC (B) Chairman Bernard Rimpu N Marak as the guest of honour. Rakseng R Marak spoke about the different government schemes and funds which will benefit the SHGs. Recalling the recent announcement made by West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner, Marak informed that for all government meetings and programmes in the future, products made by SHGs will be used. Bernard Rimpu N Marak said that there were many schemes and funds released by the Central government for SHGs through blocks and other departments which on many occasions have vanished into thin air and urged the gathering act so that they are not deprived of their rights. The Nokma of Leper Colony also delivered a few words and encouraged the women to form more self help groups.
Training on gender sensitive policing held in city
SHILLONG: Meghalaya Police in collaboration with North East Network organised a Training of Trainers on gender sensitive policing at Police Training School, Mawroh from August 8 to 10. The participants were police officers of rank Deputy Superintendent of Police, Inspector and Sub Inspector level. An expert team of the gender sensitisation and People friendly Police Project were the trainers of the three-day training who trained the police on gender, violence against women and laws safeguarding women and children. The training aimed at identifying core trainers who would carry out the trainings on gender sensitive policing in their respective districts and units.
