SHILLONG: The state BJP on Friday remembered former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee who was laid to rest with full state honours in New Delhi.
The BJP organised a condolence meeting here at its office in which founding and senior members of the party remembered Vajpayee, who had a soft corner for the North East.
Speaking at the meeting, BJP Meghalaya president Shibun Lyngdoh said Vajpayee took special interest in the region’s development.
He also said the former prime minister had a dream to connect the region with the rest of the country and hence massive road programmes for the region were initiated under the leadership of Vajpayee.
He also termed the death of the leader as a great loss for the country.
Earlier, floral tributes were paid to Vajpayee who,during his tenure as the prime minister, had also visited Shillong.
Other senior leaders of the party spoke at the condolence meeting.
A similar condolence meeting was organised in South Shillong constituency.
Meanwhile, the Lok Janshakti party in a meeting expressed shock and grief at Vajpayee’s demise.
The meeting recalled the contributions of Vajpayee such as Pokhran nuclear test and his role during Kargil war.
The meeting also observed two minutes’ silence.
