Mawkyrwat: South West Khasi Hills District Congress Committee adviser, Carness Sohshang said that the result of the Congress will ‘’surprise everyone” and warned political parties not to underestimate the Congress.
Speaking at a public meeting of the Congress at Nongnah village on Saturday, Sohshang criticised the leaders of National People’s Party (NPP) for forcefully dissolving the Ranikor Block Congress Committee (RBCC) and for taking down the flag of the party and unfurling their party flag on June 12 stating that it was “disrespectful”.
“We have a very good chance of winning this bye-election and retain the seat of the party. When I say that, I know that all of you will laugh, but remember what happened in Mawkyrwat Constituency in the last Assembly Election. I got the chance to prepare the election only for two months, but I lost only by a small margin. Therefore, do not underestimate or insult the Congress,” Sohshang said.
Sohshang also said that after dissolving the RBCC, many joined the party and four leaders applied for the ticket of the party.
“I have travelled almost all the areas in the Constituency and I found out that only leaders joined NPP but our party workers are still there and are silently working hard,” Sohshang said, adding that the Congress is very strong in border areas.
Sohshang also appealed to the supporters of the party to remain with the Congress and not be misled by the NPP. “You can say that the Congress will not get more than 1000 votes, but I will tell you the result of the Congress will surprise everyone. You should learn from the mistakes of the people of Mawkyrwat who followed Rowell Lyngdoh (NPP), but after seeing the result of the last election they regretted leaving Congress,” Sohshang added.
Sohshang also hit back at Danggo for claiming that it was Mukul Sangma who blocked all the developmental activities in Ranikor constituency. “It is very surprising that they blamed the former CM for the lack of development in the constituency. The people have elected Danggo as an MLA and it is his responsibility to take care of all the problems,” he said.
Meanwhile, Umroi MLA, George B. Lyngdoh, lambasted Danggo for the lack of development in the constituency which he has represented for more than 20 years.
“If not from the MGNREGS scheme, Nongnah area and many other villages would not have got roads and footpaths in their villages,” Lyngdoh, the former Joint Director of the MGNREGS said.
Lyngdoh also urged the people of Ranikor not to pay heed to those who are trying to mislead them and also asked them not to vote for money but according to their understanding. “I won the election from Umroi because the people stood by their principle and did not listen to false promises and rejected candidates offering money,” Lyngdoh said as he appealed the people to vote for the Congress.
Working President of the MPCC James Lyngdoh also spoke at the meeting.
