Fire destroys house, property worth Rs 30 lakh

NONGSTOIN: A house in West Khasi Hills was destroyed in a fire that started due to short circuit on Tuesday afternoon. The house was owned by Dwomlin Thongni and Spholinda Wahlang of Kyrdum near Nonglang. The fire that started from the meter reader destroyed property worth Rs 30 lakh.
No casualty was reported as there was no one at home. The children were in school and Thongni and his wife were working in the garden when they saw the flames. They tried to douse the fire but in vain.
“It was a great loss for our family as cash of Rs 5 lakh which we earned a few days back by selling ginger also burnt in the fire, 10 quintal of rice,
(little amount of gold, and the house which is roughly estimated to be Rs 15 lakh and other valuable materials are also destroyed,” Thongni said.
Wairestar Marwein, headman of Kyrdum, told media persons that the village authority tried to find assistance for the family and had urged the BDO of Mawshynrut to provide aid.
