TURA: The appointment of a non-Garo Headmaster when there is a need for a Garo teacher at a school in Tikrikilla has angered the people of the area with the local Garo Students’ Union (GSU) along with the school’s own managing committee, parents and guardians and citizens demanding the immediate termination of the newly appointed head.

Jaydul Islam Sarkar, who was recently appointed as headmaster at Tikrikilla Upgraded RMSA Secondary School has also been accused of misconduct and highhandedness by both the staff and the school SMC. The appointment of a non-Garo headmaster has created problems for the students as the school currently does not have a MIL (Garo) teacher.

The local GSU which is taking up the matter cited an incident where Sarkar had tried to appoint an unqualified Garo teacher in the school without the consent and knowledge of either the staff or the managing committee. However, the same was stopped after the committee came to know of it.

The complainants have also written several letters to the District Project Coordinator of RMSA in Tura urging the authority to remove Sarkar and to bring in his place one, Tharsius A Marak who has been appointed as the headmaster of Selsella RMSA Secondary School at the same time that Sarkar was appointed in Tikrikilla.

The complainants have hinted at political angle being involved in the appointment as no amount of complaint has evoked a positive response from the concerned authority. Following repeated complaints against the newly appointed head, the Director of School Education and Literacy, A Ch Marak had on July 20 ordered an inquiry into the matter, a report of which was to be submitted to the Head Office. However, no inquiry has taken place taken till date, according to the complainants.
