SHILLONG: An uneasy calm prevails in Harijan Colony even after the withdrawal of night curfew in the city.
During a visit to the area, it was seen that the security personnel were posted to ensure law and order, while the movement of people was not hindered.
Though some security personnel have been withdrawn, several central forces are keeping vigil in vulnerable areas.
A senior police official said since Harijan Colony and Mawlonghat are contiguous, the police and district authorities want to ensure maximum alert and hence the presence of the security personnel.
He made it clear that there would not be any reduction of forces from the area.
A police constable posted at Mawlonghat said not many vehicles are allowed to go through Harijan Colony.
“However, we have not prevented the movement of people,” he said.
After the assault of locals at Harijan Colony on May 31, a crowd swelled resulting in the stand-off between police and protesters from June 1.
The situation turned normal after the government assured the formation of a High Level Committee on the matter related to relocation of Harijan Colony settlers.
The decision of the High Level Committee is awaited.
