South Garo Hills pressure group demands better roads

SHILLONG: The Garo Hills State Movement Committee (GHSMC), South Garo Hills, representing the conglomerate of NGOs and people of South Garo Hills has written a letter to Chief Minister Conrad Sangma to highlight some of the problems and also warned the government of retaliation if no action is taken.
The committee said the people of South Garo Hills have been completely neglected in all aspects by the state especially when it comes to road transport and highways.
Despite being the revenue generator for Meghalaya in terms of coal, South Garo Hills is being neglected as proceeds meant for development of the area have not been utilized, the committee said in the memorandum.
Decades have passed since the roads in South Garo Hills were repaired or constructed, it added.
‘South Garo Hills have been depleted of its natural resources, however, there is zero improvement in terms of development. Don’t we also deserve development, are we not part of Meghalaya?, the committee questioned.
The committee demanded the repair of Dalu to Baghmara road, NH 62, Baghmara to Williamnagar road, Baghmara to Mahadeo-Moheskhola road, Baghmara to Mindikgre road, Baghmara to Rongru Asim road, Chokpot to Sibbari, PWD Road, Karukol to Nengkong, PWD Road, Daluagre to Eman Asakgre via Chokpot and Deku to Kherapara via Rimrangpara Road. They also requested the government to make a road from Nongal-Jadi to Kalu Mongchong.
‘We moved from pillar to post in the past and now, we are left only with giving the government an ultimatum. We want all our demands to be met within 7 days from the date of handing over of the memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner, South Garo Hills.
“If no concrete or visible steps are taken, we will be forced to resort to non-cooperation and civil disobedience movement in the entire South Garo Hills,’ the memorandum said.
