SHILLONG: A 24-year-old man was hit by a bullet in the city on Sunday night when he was trying to stop a brawl between two groups.
Pynskhembor Kharmawlong, a resident of Nongrah Iummarboh was injured at Lapalang Bridge near the SBI ATM in the city around 10.30 pm on Sunday.
SP (City) Steve Rynjah said the bullet hit Kharmawlong’s hand and he is admitted in NEIGRIHMS.
The police on duty at Rynjah called 108 Ambulance and informed that a person was lying unconscious near the Lapalang SBI ATM, said a statement issued by the emergency service.
When the ambulance arrived, the medical team found that Kharmawlong had a gunshot injury in his left elbow. When asked, he refused to tell them the reason of the gunshot. After first aid, he was initially shifted to Nazareth Hospital.
Preliminary investigation said Kharmawlong saw the two groups fighting on his way back home. He intervened and tried to stop the fight when the bullet hit him. Rynjah said the man initially did not realise that he was hit by a bullet.
Police recovered two empty shells of 9mm from the spot.
Terming the incident as alarming, the police officer said it appears to be a rivalry between two groups and so far no arrests have been made.
Police have swung into action and would also take the assistance of its forensic team to get to the culprits. However, they ruled out any militancy angle.
