NEW DELHI: The Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee has called a meeting on Friday to discuss about the fallout of the sudden resignation of its former president DD Lapang, besides other issues.
“The meeting, to be held at the office of the MPCC president Celestine Lyngdoh, will be attended by all the office bearers,” AICC sources said.
The AICC was upset over Lapang’s refusal to withdraw his resignation despite repeated appeals by leaders, including Sonia and Rahul Gandhi, Mukul Sangma and Vincent H Pala.
“Lapang even refused to talk to the Gandhis on phone let alone meeting them personally,” the AICC sources said.
Now, both the AICC and the MPCC are upset over Lapang’s bitter criticism of Rahul Gandhi.
In an interview with The Shillong Times, Lapang had said that Rahul “is not a Prime Minister material” and lacks leadership qualities.
“But now the Congress leadership is questioned due to mishandling of the situation. Rahul Gandhi is not a PM material. The leadership qualities of Nehru, Indira Gandhi are lacking in new leadership,” Lapang had said on Tuesday.
The AICC is also upset over the fact that the veteran leader, who was always held in high esteem both by Sonia and Rahul, did not meet or talk to either of them before or after resigning but criticised the Gandhi scion in front of the media.
Also, Lapang’s remark on important leaders — like PN Syiem, Prestone Tynsong and Sniawbhalang Dhar — leaving, thrown out or sidelined in the party has not gone down well with the MPCC and the AICC.
All these top leaders and former MLAs are now with the Congress’s rivals.
The MPCC meeting will also discuss about membership drive by the party, the district council election and other issues.
