TURA: At a time when there is a strong demand for inclusion of the Khasi language in the constitution, the Garo Graduates’ Union (GGU) along with senior citizens from Tura has urged Chief Minister, Conrad Sangma to strongly take up the matter of including the Garo Language in the Eight Schedule of the Constitution of India.

The executive meeting of the union was held on Saturday at the Government Girls’ Higher Secondary School in Tura wherein, a resolution was taken to make a strong demand for inclusion of the Garo Language in the Eight Schedule.

The union pointed out that in Article 344 and 351 of the Eight Schedule, list of languages from 1 to 18 have been included in the Eight Schedule and urged that the Garo Language should also not be left behind as it fulfills all the criteria.

“The Garo Language is one of the subjects introduced and taken in the Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBOSE) and North Eastern Hill University (NEHU). Under the circumstance, we fervently demand the inclusion of the language in the eight schedule of the constitution,” the GGU said.

Reminding of the government’s plan to table an official resolution in the ongoing Assembly Session to press for the demand for inclusion of the Khasi and Garo languages in the constitution, the union said that it was strongly supporting the move and urged the government to make it a reality.
