SHILLONG: The multiple layers of approval at the local level are delaying several road projects in the state. In the last few years, the state has got road projects worth more than Rs 7,000 crore, many of which have not moved beyond paper works.
Speaking on the matter, Deputy Chief Minister and in charge PWD Prestone Tynsong said the delay is due to the new land acquisition act that mandates the government to get NOC from district councils, which in turn needs permission from respective villages, Himas and elakas.
“However, we are focusing on few important projects and we have submitted proposals to the Centre to see if some road projects can be upgraded as national highways,” he added.
The state government wants to upgrade the road from Umtyngar to Shella via Sohra as national highway since Sohra is a major tourist destination. Besides, the road from Umsning to Jagiroad via Mawhati and another road till Garampani in Jaintia Hills will be upgraded.
Tynsong said the matter would be discussed with Union Minister of Road Transport Nitish Gadkari, who is arriving in Shillong on Monday to review road projects in the state.
As many as 19 projects worth more than Rs 7000 crore are to be implemented in the state by the National Highway Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited.
Some of the important road projects include upgradation of Shillong-Dawki road, Western Shillong bypass, Ranikor-Baghmara and Tura-Dalu roads.
