TURA: A particular MGNREGS project allotted to the Bhangarpar Part 1 Village Employment Council (VEC) in West Garo Hills has allegedly failed to take off although funds for the same were sanctioned nearly a year ago.

According to villagers, the MGNREGS project for construction of a Block Road from Paham UP School with retaining wall was sanctioned about a year ago but no work has been started till date towards the project.

A complaint in this regard has been submitted to West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner and MGNREGS District Programme Coordinator, Ram Singh where the villagers blamed VEC president, Mintu Mollah and Secretary, Taher Ali and accused them of only working for their own personal gains. The villagers claimed that a reply to an RTI filed has revealed that the two VEC leaders have no intention of completing the project and urged the DC to terminate them from their posts.

Earlier on August 29, the matter was brought to the notice of the Block development Officer concerned, however no action was taken for termination of the existing VEC or directions issued for appointing a new committee.

“We have come to know that materials for the project have already arrived, but the two VEC leaders are involved in illegal activities and have no intention of completing the allotted work. It would be destructive to keep such people in their current posts and we want them terminated immediately,” the complaint by the villagers stated.
