NONGSTOIN: Assam police removed a signboard reading ‘Welcome to Meghalaya’, installed by the Khasi Students’ Union last week, at Athiabari on Tuesday. A source said three police vehicles came to Athiabari to seize the signboard. They also questioned locals about the KSU members’ whereabouts.
They took photos of the developmental schemes at Rangsapara implemented by MGNREGS of Mawshynrut Block.
Armstrong Sohshang, president of the KSU Mawshynrut Circle, condemned the “barbaric act that scared villagers living on Meghalaya-Assam border”.
He blamed Assam police for disturbing peace in border areas.
“The Assam government did not maintain the status quo as per the agreement with Meghalaya,” Sohshang said.
He also pointed out that some villagers residing in the border area possess dual EPICs and demanded that the Election Commission intervene.
The KSU has also demanded the state government’s action. Sohshang said the union has decided to re-install the signboard as Athiabari is under Meghalaya.
