Ban on poisoning river
NONGSTOIN: The Additional District Magistrate, West Khasi Hills District, Nongstoin has promulgated an order under section 144CrPC prohibiting any person organisation, clan or group of people from poisoning, destroying the river, fishes and aquatic life in an around the river Rambrai, River Khri and the tributaries flowing into Kyrshai River and all over West Khasi Hills District. Violating this order will be prosecuted under section 188 of the Indian penal code, 1860 under specific probation of the relevant rule Acts, orders such as the Environment Acts 1986, Air act 1981, water Act 1974 and the NGT order dated August 5, 2013. The restriction has come into force until further orders. However, any one aggrieved by the order may approach the competent authority.
Mega IAS exam on September 29
Mawkyrwat: South West Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner, Isawanda Laloo has informed that the Mega IAS Scholarship exam for IAS aspirants in the district will be held on September 29 at Mawkyrwat. Laloo also said that ALS (India’s Largest IAS Network wit 75+ centres across India) will train the selected candidates at their two authorized learning centre in Shillong and Tura depending on the candidate’s location preferences. Application forms will be available in the office of the Deputy Commissioner at Mawkyrwat and the office of the SDO (Civil) at Ranikor during office hours. The last date of registration, free of cost, is on September 26 while age limit is 20 years and above.
Better road needed from Phlangdiloin to Ranikor: UDP
SHILLONG: The UDP Ranikor Circle spoke on the need to have the road constructed from Phlangdiloin till Ranikor as people are suffering due to lack of developmental activities. In a statement issued here, Working President, UDP Ranikor Circle, Cornelius Nongbri said residents from Phlangdiloin usually go to Ranikor to get birth certificate, schedule tribe certificate, 100-days wage scheme, health care and other affairs.”It is walking distance of 14 hours (back and forth) from Phlangdiloin to Ranikor and the road is also not a plain road,” he added.
Voluntary group opposes introduction of panchayati raj
SHILLONG: Kynhun ki Nongtrei Mon Sngewbha (KKNMS) opposed the introduction of Panchayati Raj system in the state asserting it is against the wishes of the indigenous people. In a statement issued here, the KKNMS said, “We venture to say that it is doubtful if the paragraph 3 (B) 2 A (I) of the Amendment Bill, 2015 pertaining to the insertion of village council and Municipal Council in the Sixth Schedule is legally not viable by reason that such insertion upset the administration of the Land Tenure System of the state of Meghalaya where the land belong to the people and not to the government.”
It took note of the meeting of Chief Minister Conrad Sangma along with Tripura CM, Biplab Kumar Deb to set up a Panchayat like institution in the Sixth Schedule areas through election to facilitate rapid development.
BSF seizes cattle worth Rs 12.6 lakh
SHILLONG: On Monday, the BSF troops deployed at Nayabazar, East Khasi Hills, seized 59 number of cattle. Similarly, in another incident, BSF troops deployed at Tuka & Kasinda, East Khasi Hills district altogether seized 14 more cattle while being smuggled from India to Bangladesh. A total haul of 73 cattle worth more than Rs. 12.69 lakhs was seized on the same day. It is mentioned that the smugglers were trying to smuggle cattle from the unfenced area but the alert BSF jawan foiled their attempts. The BSF seized 117 number of cattle and contraband items worth more than Rs. 18.93 lakhs, while being smuggled from India to Bangladesh for the last seven days from the areas of Tuka, Nayabazar, Lyngkhat, Umsiyam, Ryngkua, Kasinda O P Shella Distt East Khasi Hills, Muktapur, Lamasaki (West Jaintia Hills). All the seized items were handed over to concerned department for legal action.
Social worker gets honorary doctorate
SHILLONG: The National Virtual University for peace and education, registered UNO, Geneva has conferred upon Vikash Gupta (Ward Commissioner, Shillong Cantonment Board and social worker) an honorary doctorate in social welfare and social services on September 22. The event was held at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Bengaluru 2018 in recognition of his concern and commitment towards the society at large of Meghalaya.
Programme on sexual harassment of women at workplace held
Shillong: A safe workplace is a woman’s legal right as guaranteed by Articles 14, 15 and 21 of the Indian Constitution and The Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act 2013, seeks to do the same. North East Network organised a capacity building programme of educational institutions on sexual harassment of women at workplace on Tuesday. The participants were faculties from 30 educational institutions of schools and colleges of Shillong. The aim of the programme was to facilitate the creation of safe environment for women and female students in the institution, where preventive measures are taken to address sexual harassment; reported case is addressed and justice delivered to the survivors of such violence.
Vocational training for mushroom cultivation
SHILLONG: The College of Post Graduate Studies for Agricultural Sciences (CPGSAS) Umiam, a constituent college of Central Agricultural University, Imphal, is organising a three-month vocational training programme on mushroom cultivation w.e.f. from September 25 to December 24 for school dropouts and unemployed youths of the North eastern states of India . A total of 25 (twenty five) candidates were selected for the training course of which 18 males and 7 females from the states of Meghalaya and Manipur attended the inaugural function on Tuesday which was inaugurated by Dr. N.B. Singh, Dean, CPGS, CAU, Umiam.
Bus, sumos & tourist taxis to increase fare
Mawkyrwat: The Joint Action Committee Mawkyrwat Area Commercial Vehicle has decided to increase the price fare for buses, sumos and tourist taxis because of the increase price in petrol and diesel, taxes as well as vehicle spare parts. DW Salahe, Secretary JAC Mawkyrwat Area Commercial Vehicle informed that the decision was taken during a meeting held on Tuesday at Mawkyrwat in which it was unanimously decided to increase the fare of all the commercial vehicles. He said that the JAC will like to request all the people to support the decision for the betterment of serving the people. He said that the fare for the Buses from Mawkyrwat to Shillong will be Rs.100/- , Sumos Rs.120/- and Tourist Taxis Rs.140/- wef October 1.
Over 3000 elderly, PwDs to receive aid under central scheme
TURA: Around 3216 senior citizens and PWDs, who are beneficiaries under the Assistance to Disabled Persons for Purchase / Fitting of Aids and Appliances (ADIP) and Rashtriya Vayoshri Yojana (RVY) scheme in Garo Hills are set to receive aids and appliances in a mega distribution camp to be held on October 26 here at Dikki Bandi Stadium in Dakopgre in Tura. A meeting was convened by West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner, Ram Singh on Monday at the DRDA Conference Hall. During the meeting, different infrastructure and other necessary arrangements for the camp was discussed and various line departments have been assigned specific task for the said programme.
Project under MGNREGS fails to take off
TURA: A particular MGNREGS project allotted to Bhangarpar Part 1 Village Employment Council (VEC) in West Garo Hills has allegedly failed to take off although funds for the same were sanctioned a year ago. According to villagers, the MGNREGS project for construction of a block road from Paham UP School with retaining wall was sanctioned about a year ago but no work has been started till date. A complaint in this regard has been submitted to West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner and MGNREGS District Programme Coordinator, Ram Singh where the villagers blamed VEC president, Mintu Mollah and Secretary, Taher Ali and accused them of only working for their own personal gain. The villagers claimed that a reply to an RTI filed has revealed that the two VEC leaders have no intention of completing the project and urged the DC to terminate them from their posts.
Series of programmes mark Swachhta Hi Seva campaign
TURA: As part of the Swachhta Hi Sewa Campaign in the district, West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner, Ram Singh distributed waste bins for collection of bio-degradable waste and non bio-degradable waste materials for the residents of Bonepa Atilla locality recently. Speaking on the occasion as Chief Guest, Ram Singh mentioned about the initiative taken for constructing of community toilets by using plastic bottles under Swachh Bharat Mission at Waribok area and added that one toilet requires about 5000 bottles. Further, he requested the people of the localities to cooperate on the segregation of plastic wrappers separately and hand over to the TMB collection vehicles so that it can be used for road construction after recycling. Meanwhile, importance and demo on home composting using G2G granules was demonstrated by staff of Tura Municipal Board. The practise of home composting is hoped to reduce the burden on transportation as well as to make the compost available at household level. Further, in relation to the said campaign, the Deputy Commissioner along with Sub- Divisional Officer, Dadenggre Civil Sub-Division Swapnil Tembe also took part in the Tura Peak Eco Trail Trekking cum cleaning drive.
