GUWAHATI: A body suspected to be that of an ULFA (I) insurgent, who was involved in the encounter with Army on September 24, was recovered from Burhi Dihing River near South Tekri on Thursday. As per initial reports from the sources, the recovered insurgent’s body is suspected to be that Rudreshwar Baruah alias Jan Asom, a Defence spokesman informed.
Jan Asom was recruited to ULFA (I) in 2013 and since then was actively involved in criminal activities including extortion, kidnapping, killing of security personnel and innocent civilians. He was likely to have been also involved in the killing of Officer-in-Charge of Bordumsha Police Station on May 4.
The body was found with the help of local fishermen and search parties of the Army. Live grenades and magazines filled with ammunition were also found on the dead body.
The search of second insurgent who is suspected to be injured in the encounter is still in progress . He is likely to be Babul Moran @ Tiger Asom. Security forces are also searching for the rest of the fleeing insurgents in the Reserve forest areas.
As reported earlier, based on specific intelligence of Army, a major operation was launched against ULFA(I), on September 24 in the areas North of Jagun towards Kakorani Reserve Forest. The operation resulted in heavy firefight between the Army columns and ULFA (I) insurgents.
