SHILLONG: A man from Garo Hills who suffered tremendous hardships in his childhood is now taking giant steps to bring livelihood for the people apart from bringing name and fame to the state.
Layland Marak is an entrepreneur from Ganolgre village under the Rongram C&RD Block in West Garo Hills where he is engaged in a unique business of processing and selling aloe vera products through a self helped group (SHG) named Chizingjang.
As the entrepreneur is doing his best to promote livelihood for the people, many people in the district praise Marak for his commitment and contributions to the development and transformation of Ganolgre.
Marak is a pioneer and is considered the driving force behind the Chizingjang SHG and the aloe vera business.
His untiring efforts and dedication to make it big have taken the SHG to new heights and he is hoping to create more opportunities to support his fellow community members so they too can achieve their dreams.
Marak is the fifth of seven siblings. His parents were farmers whom he lost at a young age. Having no one to look after them, they were left with no choice but to move from the village to stay with their relatives elsewhere.
Marak moved to Williamnagar while his other siblings moved to other locations wherever their relatives could offer a home.
In Williamnagar, Marak excelled in school and showed keen interest in pursuing higher education. After matriculation, he moved to Tura and completed his high school from Government College, Tura.
He then got himself enrolled for Bachelor of Arts (BA). Unfortunately, tragedy struck again. During his second year in college, he contracted an eye disease and had to undergo surgery. A self-made man, Marak has a vision to change lives of hundreds of people at Chizingjang and he is dedicated to it.
