MAWKYRWAT: Fisheries Minister Comingone Ymbon inaugurated an aqua park at Photjaud War village in South West Khasi Hills on Wednesday.
The aqua park is the first of its kind in Meghalaya and aims to boost local economy, besides promoting tourism in the area.
“The objective of this park is not only to increase fish production but also to attract more tourists to this beautiful place,” Ymbon said.
With rivers and water bodies in Mawkyrwat still clean, the minister urged people to maintain cleanliness. “If we do not preserve the environment, not only water that we have to carry in a bottle, but I’am afraid that time will come that we will have to also carry oxygen,” he added. The project was constructed under the Meghalaya State Aquaculture Mission-I at an estimated cost of Rs 25 lakh. The state government will launch the Aqua Culture Mission–II on October 26.
The minister said though fish production under Aquaculture Mission-I has increased, there is still a shortfall of 15,000 metric tonne.
