SHILLONG: Union Minister of State for Textiles, Ajay Tamta who visited Shillong on Saturday assured that the Ministry would release 7.8 crore for the construction of a textile tourism complex in Nongpoh.
The Minister who visited different weaving centres here in Shillong also informed that the funds for the textile tourism complex would be released within 15 days.
Stating that the NBCC has also completed the construction of an apparel centre Worth Rs 14 crores in Ampati, he added that the Ministry would provide all the infrastructure and machines to the apparel centre so that local garments can be exported throughout the world.
“We would also like to link the apparel centre with fashion designers so that the local garments are promoted throughout the world, he said
Earlier, Tamta added that the production of Mulberry, Berry and Muga was 500 metric tons in Meghalaya before 2014 but now the production of these materials in Meghalaya have touched 1000 metric tons.
He also said that the Union Government have sanctioned as much as Rs 43 crores in Meghalaya under the Integrated Sericulture Development Project and Intensive Bivoltine Sericulture Development Project
“We gave new seeds to the people and people learnt new technologies about breeding of silkworm and people here were producing crops earlier but now they are producing three crops in a year.
It may be mentioned that North East has large number of weavers in the country and out of 50 lakh weavers, around 65 per cent of them are in the North East.
The Minister during his visit to Shillong also visited sericulture farm and weaving centre and interacted with the weavers.
