City police to be extra vigilant during puja celebrations

SHILLONG: With Shillong set to be gripped in the festive mood of Durga Puja, the Police department has made elaborative security arrangements throughout East Khasi Hills including the capital to ensure peaceful celebrations.
Talking to media persons here on Monday, East Khasi Hills SP Davis Marak said police will be extra vigilant to keep a tab on instances of eve-teasing, drunken brawls and drunken driving.
Stating that the department has conducted several rounds of meetings with the various puja committees, Marak added that despite the constraints, additional manpower will be deployed o the streets during the Puja celebrations.
“Special naka checkings are taking place and traffic arrangement is in place and we are taking care of other places like Sohra and Mawsynram as well where Puja will be celebrated,” the district police chief added.
In addition, police personnel would be deployed in each and every puja pandal and police has asked the puja committees to provide assistance to police in form of volunteer for crowd controlling and regulation of traffic.
CCTV cameras have been made a compulsory part of the pandal arrangement.
Marak urged parents to be careful with their children to avoid any mishap.
Reacting to a query about instances of eve-teasing, drunken brawls and drunken driving, he said that the Central Puja Committee will set up its own control room which would be manned by police personnel to attend to any kind of eventuality.
As far as the traffic situation is concerned, the SP said the department would deploy over 100 home guard volunteers and 50-100 traffic personnel in addition to the existing strength for effective traffic management.
