SHILLONG: The state government has received less central fund for border areas that has affected development works.
Border Areas Development Minister Lahkmen Rymbui said on Monday that many things need to be done in border areas.
“Last year we were supposed to get Rs 25 crore for border area development but the government got only Rs 17.5 crore and every area of the state from the international border of Bangladesh is to be covered under this scheme which is from Zero to 10 km,” he told reporters.
“I cannot deny the fact that many things have to be done. But Border Areas Development is only a department that makes certain intervention programmes in border areas,” he added.
The schemes are being prepared at the district level and sent to the state government, which forwards them to the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (Border Management).
The Border Areas Development receives funds from the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, the North Eastern Council and other sources. “We are exploring every possibility to help border area villages,” said Rymbui.
