SHILLONG: Taking cue from KHADC Chief HS Shylla, the Sordar of Mairang has encouraged people to have big families.
The Dorbar Shnong Pyndengumïong, Mairang, at a function held on Friday, distributed utilities to 84 families, each with 10-16 members.
According to Sordar Bornard Syiemiong, the intention is to have more population since the Khasi race is miniscule.
He said the population policy of the Centre is not applicable to Khasis as the population is less compared to the mainland.
Syiemiong argued that this will help reduce dependence on outside workforce.
Unlike Shylla who had announced cash award for bigger families in the past, the Sordar only felicitated the families in kind.
