PWD minister lays foundation for school building
SHILLONG: PWD (building) Minister Comingone Ymbon on Thursday unveiled the foundation stone for construction of a new building for Lummuroo Secondary School at Shangpung Pohshnong. The construction of the new building will be funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) under the Supporting Human Capital Development in Meghalaya project at an amount of Rs 1.82 crore, a statement said. The minister pointed out that since the project has to be completed in one year, things have to move faster. He urged the officers to monitor the work without compromising with the quality of construction. Ymbon laid emphasis on quality education in rural areas to prevent migration of students to cities. “We need to equip our children and for this we need competent teachers to give them the right kind of handholding they need,” the minister said. Ymbon lauded Lummuroo Secondary School that has served the people of the village for 29 years. The school started in 1989 and at present there are over 544 students in the school. Ymbon encouraged the students to chase their dreams through hard work and to something great in future. Local MDC K M Lyttan, engineers, principal, teachers and headmen were also present on the occasion.
DC orders tourist vehicles to adhere to rules
JOWAI: The Deputy Commissioner of West Jaintia Hills has issued an order to all tourist vehicles and local taxis in the district to adhere to the standard service operation and to ensure that tourists and commuters are not exploited in any way. Failure to comply with the order will result in necessary action being taken against the driver and the vehicle.
Symposium on doubling farmers’ income
SHILLONG: A National Symposium on the ‘Role of Plant Pathology in Empowering and Doubling Farmers’ Income’ was organised by the ICAR Research Complex for NEH region in collaboration with Indian Society of Plant Pathologists Society (INSOPP) PAU, Ludhiana on Thursday. The programme was inaugurated by Governor Tathagata Roy in the presence of Narendra Prakash, Director, ICAR Research Complex for NEH and other dignitaries. In his inaugural address, Roy lauded the efforts of the ICAR Research Complex in empowering the farmers of the region and highlighted the fact that pests and diseases are the major causes of loss for the farmers and hence the role of the plant pathologist is an integral part of the agricultural system. The National Symposium also witnessed a series of presentations from the scientists and academicians from all over India. A souvenir and a book of abstracts were also released during the programme. More than 100 delegates from all over India attended.
Graduation day held at Sacred Heart Theological College
SHILLONG: Sacred Heart Theological College (SHTC), Mawlai held its 6th annual graduation ceremony on Thursday to honour the accomplishments of 21 graduating students. Nongthymmai MLA Charles Pyngrope attended the programme as the chief guest in the presence of Fr. John Zosiama, provincial delegate of Salesian Province of Shillong, Fr. Barnes Mawrie, SHTC president and Fr. Philip Barjo, Rector of SHTC. The programme ended with valedictory speech by Bro. Samuel Rai.
‘Run for Unity’ to be held on October 31
Ampati: South West Garo Hills District Police in collaboration with the District Administration and District Sports Office will organise a mini marathon – “Run for Unity” to commemorate Sardar Jayanti Day in Ampati on October 31. The 10km mini marathon will be open for all and interested parties will have to report at Ampati Students’ Field at 6:00 am on October 31.
