MAWKYRWAT: The South West Khasi Hills unit of the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) and the Umdohlun circle met Ranikor MLA Pius Marwein on Monday urging him to set up another agriculture development office at Umdohlun-Wahkaji.
The pressure group apprised the MLA of problems faced by farmers at Wahkaji, Phlangdiloin, Umdohlun and Warsan Lyngdoh areas.
Dusterwell K Lyngdoh, organising secretary of KSU South West Khasi Hills, said most of the people from the areas cannot access government schemes because there was no quota for Umdohlun, Wahkaji, Phlangdiloin and Warsan Lyngdoh which fall under the jurisdiction of the Agriculture Development Officer (Headquarters) in Mawkyrwat.
“The jurisdiction of the headquarters was too wide and therefore these areas are always left out in terms of assistance from the government,” Lyngdoh said.
Therefore, with only one office at Maheshkhola, the pressure group urged the MLA to take up the issue with the state government for setting up an ADO office (Circle) in the Umdohlun-Wahkaji area.
The union also requested Agriculture Minister Banteidor Lyngdoh to focus on this area that has been neglected for years now.
