SHILLONG: The state Congress protested in front of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) office in Oakland on Friday to condemn the removal of CBI Director Alok Kumar Verma allegedly to prevent investigation into Rafale deal.
The Congress members, including women and youth leaders, with placards led by Opposition leader Mukul Sangma shouted slogans in front of the CBI office and later took out a rally that culminated at Sangma’s residence.
Speaking at the gathering, Sangma said the way the Narendra Modi government “is indulging in such activities is a threat to sustainability of democracy”.
“Modi is trying to utilise and misuse these agencies’ henchman,” he said and alleged that “the whole administration of justice is being manipulated”.
Referring to CBI’s second in command Rakesh Asthana as Modi’s blue-eyed boy, Sangma alleged he was brought to the CBI to prevent spilling of beans and they were hiding “one sin”.
According to Sangma, such activities of the BJP-led central government “will derail the functioning of the premiere investigating agency at a time when important cases are pending and many are being investigated”.
Citing the example of the now defunct planning commission, Sangma said the Union Government destroyed institutions after institutions. He also alleged that it was engaging in manipulation of small northeastern states by stopping funds and derailing the momentum of growth.
