TURA: Student and social groups from Williamnagar are contemplating another phase of protests unless the state government initiates work to complete the road leading to Rongap bride that leads to the district headquarters of East Garo Hills, at the earliest.
The continuous delay in completion of the bridge and its approach has forced organizations to undertake a series of protests to highlight their grievances.
On Friday, members of several organizations picketed the offices of various government departments and also burnt effigies in front of the state Forest Department in anger over reports that the forest department was yet to give it’s no objection certificate for the completion of the bridge and it’s approach road which allegedly passes through forest territory. To clear land for development through a forest area under government jurisdiction requires special permission from the forest department.
The Rongap bridge has been for years remained incomplete due to government apathy and civil society groups have for long accused successive administration of turning a deaf ear to the demands of the people.
