GUWAHATI: Volvo bus services to Shillong and Itanagar from the city were launched by Assam industry minister, Chandra Mohan Patowary on Monday.
Four such buses will ply from Guwahati to Shillong while two other buses will operate between the city and Itanagar.
A dedicated mobile app and website was also launched through which commuters of long distance Assam State Transport Corporation buses can book or cancel tickets at their convenience from anywhere in the state or region.
The Volvo buses will be operated by Chartered Speed Private Limited on public-private partnership mode.
Launching the services at a function at Inter State Bus Terminus in Betkuchi here, Patowary said that the introduction of Volvo service from Guwahati to Shillong and Guwahati to Itanagar has scripted a new chapter in the history of Assam State Transport Corporation.
“The dedicated Android based mobile app launched today is just another feather in our cap,” the minister said.
He further said that ASTC was committed for betterment of services through positive changes in internal governance, infrastructure, IT enabled services, easy access to public,
quality services, effective and efficient services.
Patowary talked at length on a slew of measures taken during the regime of
the present government for development of the corporation and its service to the people of the state.
He mentioned about the increase of transport department’s revenue compared to the previous years.
The Minister also spoke on the immense possibility the opening of Chittagong Port and the sea link for India will bring to the region’s trade and commerce sector.
He deliberated on how four-laning of National Highways, double-tracking of railways, linking of the six capitals of ASEAN through international flights will benefit the people of thw region.
Speaking on the occasion, chairman of ASTC, Ashok Bhattarai said that the corporation was an important component of the identity of the state’s transport system.
