SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA), which has to make a crucial decision on common candidates, will hold its coordination committee meeting later this month.
NPP state president WR Kharlukhi said the meeting will be held “as soon as Chief Minister Conrad Sangma returns” and “I am 101 percent confident that we will be able to arrive at a consensus for the common candidate”.
The committee met last month to discuss the idea of fielding common candidates in both Shillong and Tura Lok Sabha seats.
During the meeting, the alliance partners had expressed their views on the election and all of them said they would like to go back to their respective parties and discuss about it.
The UDP, a major ally and one of six parties supporting the coalition, wants its leader Jemino Mawthoh to be the common candidate.
PDF, another ally, with four MLAs is also keen to propose its common candidate in the next meeting of the coordination committee.
BJP too seems to be inclined to field its candidate in the Lok Sabha election.
