MAWKYRWAT: The Khasi Student’s Union (KSU) Ranikor Circle conducted a checking of labour license and other documents for the migrant labourers in Photkroh village, South West Khasi Hills District wherein 20 labourers were found without license or work permit and other documents.
KSU Ranikor Circle, president, Marconi Thongni said that the KSU has taken this step after witnessing a flow of migrant labourers from outside the state in border areas like Photkroh, Nongjri and Borsohra.
“After the government’s decision to implement work permit in the state,a labour inspector was appointed in Ranikor Civil Sub-Division, but till now we do not see any inspector performing their duty properly,” Thongni said.
He said that with the release of the final draft of the NRC in Assam in which lakhs of people were left out, the Jaitbynriew as a small tribe is in danger if illegal migrants were allowed to work freely within the state as there is no law that restricts the flow of illegal migrants.
Thongni also warned contractors who bring the migrant labourers to Meghalaya.
“They should apply for all the required documents or else action will be taken and the labourers will have to go back,” he said.
