SHILLONG: The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has asked the state government to consider construction of an alternate road to enter the city.
After a meeting on Wednesday, PAC member Zenith Sangma said the committee has suggested constructing another road.
The existing road through the Umiam Dam is the only way to reach Shillong from Guwahati and other parts of the country.
Reacting to a query, Sangma informed that the alternate route is from the VIP road to Mawsiatkhnam, Lumshyiap and Madan Nonglonglakhiat that connects with the Shillong bypass. “So we have suggested the department to process this proposal for immediate sanction,” he added.
The PWD (Roads) was also directed to expedite work on Mawlai bypass that “will help solve 50 percent of the traffic congestion at Mawlai junction, according to the findings of the department”.
Meanwhile, PAC also asked PWD to address the problems faced by locals due to the ongoing construction works at Umroi airport. Two hills have to be flattened to facilitate landing of aircraft and in the process, “the loose soil has been dumped somewhere and this has created problem for locals”, Sangma said.
