SHILLONG: The Congress, which has only one candidate for Shillong, has at least five applicants for Tura Lok Sabha seat.
Working president of the party James Lyngdoh said on Saturday that while the party currently has sitting MP Vincent Pala to contest the Shillong seat, there are several applicants for Tura.
“We will screen the candidates for the Tura seat and take a final call at a later stage,” he said.
Though CLP leader Mukul Sangma will be the deciding factor for the Tura seat, the party will have a committee to recommend the names for the AICC to give final clearance.
In the past, besides Mukul, his brother Zenith Sangma, wife Dikkanchi Shira, son-in-law Darly Momin and Congress leader Deborah Marak had unsuccessfully contested against either PA Sangma or Agatha Sangma and Conrad Sangma, who is currently the chief minister.
Pala confident to win
When asked about the plan of the MDA to put up a candidate for Shillong seat, Pala expressed confidence about his victory.
MDA is unlikely to have any unity in fielding a common candidate in Shillong since there are varied views from coalition partners.
According to Pala, whether there is unity in the MDA or disunity, he is confident to win the seat.
