Awareness program highlights need to form VDPs

TURA: An awareness programme for 50 Nokmas and the general public was organized recently at Kakija in South Garo Hills by the Garoland State Movement Committee (GSMC) in collaboration with the District Police Department.

SDPO of Chokpot Sub-Division, Ravi K Sangma who was the Chief Guest on the occasion said that their department was working for the people and trying to connect to the people especially with those from the rural areas. He added that if the department work in unison with the Nokmas, the society would grow and prosper as well as deter the youths from involving themselves in illegal activities.

Superintendent of Police, Abraham T Sangma while informing that the police department was trying to bring peace to the region urged the Nokmas to do their part. He urged them to take steps to form Village Defense Parties (VDPs) in their respective jurisdictions.

Co Chairman of the GSMC, Balkarin Ch Marak said that the region was lacking behind in many aspects. He said that the region had seen many incidents of killings, kidnapping and extortions and that the formation of a Village Defense Party (VDP) was a must in every village.
