JOWAI: A team of East Jaintia Hills police arrested one of the prime accused in the November 8 assault of two activists from Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati on Friday.
Showmewell B Kyndait (38) is a resident of Shangpung Pohshnong village and is involved in illegal coal trading mostly in and around Kongong and Wapung areas, according to police sources.
“We had tried our best to arrest him but he was absconding as he tried to evade arrest. But today based on credible information, our team arrested him while he was trying to take a flight to South India, most probably to Bangalore,” the East Jaintia Hills police chief Sylvester Nongtngar said. The SP said Kyndait’s phone was switched off when police tried to call him up. “We picked him up today (Friday) from the airport and detained him for few hours for interrogation, during which we found that he is one of the main persons who assaulted CSWO President Agnes Kharshiing and we arrested him,” Nongtngar added.
Meanwhile, Hamlenshwa Rymbai, who was arrested from Wapungskur, is in a local hospital, the SP informed when asked whether he was in police custody.
Also, in connection with the arrest made by East Jaintia Hills police recently, the name of an accused was mistakenly written as Charming Siangshai of Wapungskur. The arrested person is Charming Shadap and he is from Wapung Shnong (Kongong area).
