Three killed, 18 injured in road accident in Bihar
Siwan: Three persons including two women were killed and 18 others injured when a truck hit a stationary pick-up van in Bihar’s Siwan district on Friday morning, officials said. Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) of Siwan Sadar, Aman Kumar said the incident occurred near Jiradei Mor on Siwan-Mairwa state highway when the truck hit the stationary pick-up van from behind, killing three persons on the spot and leaving 18 others injured. The deceased have been identified as Anarkali Devi, Rinku Devi and Bal Kishore Singh, the SDO said and added they belonged to Lachhwar village. The injured persons have been admitted to Siwan sadar hospital for treatment, he said, adding that all the persons – deceased and injured – were going to Darauli from Lachhwar village in Gopalganj on the occasion of Kartik purnima. The driver and the cleaner of the truck managed to escape from the spot along with the vehicle, the SDO added. (PTI)

Man caught smuggling gold worth Rs 79 lakh at Delhi airport
New Delhi: A man was arrested at the Delhi airport for allegedly trying to smuggle into the country gold worth about Rs 79 lakh, officials said on Friday. The 23-year-old man was intercepted by customs officials after his arrival from Riyadh on Monday. “A detailed personal and baggage search of the passenger resulted in the recovery of 22 gold bars of foreign origin collectively weighing 2.5 kg,” a statement issued by the customs said. The gold bars, valued at about Rs 79 lakh, have been seized and the passenger, who is a native of Muzaffarnagar in Uttar Pradesh, has been arrested, the statement said. (PTI)

Sanitary worker held for harassing varsity student
Chennai: A 28-year-old sanitation worker was on Friday arrested for the alleged sexual harassment of a woman student of SRM University following a complaint by the varsity, the police said. The students had on Thursday protested inside the university, located at Kattankulathur on the outskirts of Chennai, alleging inaction on the part of the administration despite the victim’s complaint. University Vice-Chancellor Sandeep Sancheti, however, denied the allegations. According to a student, the victim, a second-year undergraduate, was sexually harassed inside the women’s hostel lift at around 3 pm Thursday. “The man masturbated in front of the student in the hostel lift, following which she reported the issue to the hostel warden,” the student, who did not wish to be identified, said. However, the hostel warden brushed her concern aside and instead indulged in victim-shaming by questioning the clothes that the victim was wearing, the student, who took part in the protest, said. Soon, the information spread across the campus triggering a massive protest, videos and pictures of which went viral on the social media. (PTI)

Kashmir youth arrested with 100 grams heroin in Jammu
Jammu: A youth hailing from south Kashmir was arrested with 100 grams of heroin in Jammu on Friday, police said. He was identified as Nisar Ahmed Gangroo, a resident of Anantnag district, they said. Gangroo was arrested from Valmiki Chowk after a police party got suspicious about his movements and recovered 100 grams of heroin from his possession after a search, the police said. A case has been registered in the matter and investigation is underway, they said. (PTI)

Man jumps off fourth floor of Janakpuri District Centre
New Delhi: A man, in his 30s, allegedly committed suicide on Friday after jumping from the fourth floor of Janakpuri District Centre, police said. According to the police, they received a call at around 10.15 am about the incident. The deceased is yet to be identified. He was aged around 35, police said. Prime facie, it seems a case of suicide, Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Monika Bhardwaj said. He landed in front of a tea shop whose owner called the police and informed about the incident, police said. The man’s skull was broken in the incident. Further investigation is on, the officer said. Justice Kothari sworn in as Judge of Madras High Court
Chennai: Justice Vineet Kothari was sworn in as a judge of the Madras High Court on Friday. With Justice Kothari taking oath, the number of judges in the Madras High Court has gone up to 61 as against the sanctioned strength of 75. He was administered the oath by the Chief Justice of Madras High Court VK Tahilramani. He will be second in the seniority list after the transfer of Justice Huluvadi G Ramesh to the Madhya Pradesh High Court. Prior to his transfer to the Madras High Court, Kothari was a judge in the Karnataka High Court. He had previously been a judge in the Rajasthan High Court for 11 years. As a lawyer, Kothari had practised tax and other commercial and constitutional laws, arbitration and company law for 20 years. (PTI)

Woman allegedly killed for dowry
Muzaffarnagar: A 22-year-old woman was allegedly strangulated to death by her husband following a dispute over dowry, police said on Friday. Sonali was married to Ajit (22) for three years and was allegedly being harassed for not bringing enough dowry by her in-laws, the victim’s father claimed in the police complaint. The body was found hanging from the ceiling of her house in Behda Sadat village to make it look like a suicide, the complainant alleged. Ajit was arrested by the police and a case was registered against him and another person, police said. The husband, however, refuted the accusations against him and his family and claimed that Sonali ended her life by hanging herself over a family dispute. (PTI)

3 injured in clash in UP
Muzaffarnagar: Three persons including two women were injured after a clash broke out between two groups, police said on Friday. The incident happened on Thursday in Bhanwada village while some children were throwing stones at monkeys to scare them away, they said. One of the stones accidentally hit a woman which led to confrontation between the two groups, they added. The situation soon spiralled out of control as both sides began pelting stones at each other, they said. Sitara and Salma sustained injuries and were shifted to hospital, police said, adding that a hunt has been launched to nab the main accused. (PTI)
