SHILLONG: Congress President Rahul Gandhi has condemned the assault on activist Agnes Kharshiing.
In a letter to state party president Celestine Lyngdoh recently, Rahul said, “I write to strongly condemn the recent assault against activist Agnes Kharshiing allegedly by coal miners and truck drivers. Media reports state that her sustained efforts to expose illegal mining in the state resulted in this attack.”
According to the Congress president, it is a matter of great concern that certain elements could attack a prominent member of a civil society organisation with such impunity.
“The increasing tendency to defy the orders of quasi-judicial and judicial authorities and attacking those committed towards upholding the rule of law must be fought against. Apart from the blatantly criminal conduct, such illegal mining activities are causing havoc on a fragile ecosystem,” Rahul said.
Stating that Agnes’s condition continues to be critical, Rahul requested Celestine to extend the Congress party’s support to her in any manner and wished her speedy recovery.
