SHILLONG: Leader of the opposition Mukul Sangma has alleged that civil society activists in the state are being threatened because those in power have unleashed a reign of terror.
Sangma told reporters after the CLP meeting on Tuesday that he “received inputs from some social activists who are being threatened”.
“This is what is happening in the state. It is because people in power are involved in unleashing the reign of terror. They are doing this to ensure that their illegal activities cannot be questioned and exposed by anyone,” Sangma said.
Sangma criticised the chief minister for continuously denying illegal coal mining. “Why the chief minister is in a denial mode is a million dollar question which we will find out in the Assembly,” he said.
Stating that even the media is not safe in the state, Sangma said though the government has ordered an independent inquiry into the illegal coal mining issue, the opposition would ensure that there is no delay in probe or filing of charge-sheet.
