SHILLONG: The state government is going slow on the improvement of Pine Mount School despite the State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (SCPCR) chairperson, Meena Kharkongor, exposing various anomalies in the functioning of the school.
Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui said recently that the department was examining the report, without revealing the concrete steps to be taken by the government.
He also said the government will look at all the shortcomings of the school and others.
Rymbui, however, did not make it clear the immediate steps which he will take to address the issues.
Earlier, the SCPCR chairperson had made it clear in her report that a prestigious school of the state is marred by poor administration and lack of coordination between the principal of the school and the teachers.
Other problems include poor functioning of boarding as the children are deprived of safe water, proper environment and nutritious food. Kharkongor found out these shortcomings during a visit to the school on October 1.
Besides the buildings being in poor condition, it was found that the school did not have a counsellor, visiting doctor or nurses to address the needs of the boarders when there is an emergency.
Unhygienic bedrooms of the boarders were detected during the visit and conversion of the dining place to a study-room has irked the commission.
Last month, the teachers of the school had also submitted a memorandum to the Principal to rectify the problems in boarding section, including congested classrooms, lack of proper sanitation and water supply in the toilets.
There were also complaints about the food served to the boarders.
