TURA: Another Garo group has raised objection to the district council’s decision to cut down mature trees in its reserve forest for revenue.
The A’chick Youth Welfare Organisation (AYWO) has said it is against the resolution passed by the Dipul R Marak-led Executive Committee of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) to cut down the ‘mature trees under its jurisdiction’.
On Friday, the Association for Democracy and Empowerment (ADE) had said, “Can we exchange life for money? We have been fortunate to have such a mature virgin forest in our land. Has the EC led by CEM of GHADC gone psychotic and mad to order cutting of mature trees? Moreover how can he determine that the trees are mature enough to be done away with.”
The GHADC wants to cut down trees in Damalgre Range, Naguapara Range, Phulbari Range and Samanda Range forest areas. The chief executive member had said the council had no other option as it was facing acute financial crunch.
