SHILLONG: The Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) MLA Adelbert Nongrum said the NPP should make a categorical stand with regard to its support to the BJP-led NDA government at the Center.
In a statement issued here, the MLA said he would support any government in Meghalaya sans BJP.
Citing the regional AGP’s exit from the BJP-led alliance in Assam over the Citizenship Amendment Bill row, he said, “KHNAM requests the NPP to state clearly without ambiguity if it still supported the BJP in the Centre and the State when the BJP-led government at the Centre is responsible for passing such a Bill.”
The KHNAM requested the other constituents of the MDA –the UDP, HSPDP, PDF etc., to clearly state if they still supported the BJP.
Nongrum reiterated his opposition to the Citizenship Amendment Bill and also asked the government to take steps to resolve the Assam-Meghalaya Boundary issue once and for all.
In a separate statement issued here, the president of KHNAM youth wing, Thomas Passah condemned the BJP government for passing the CAB despite several protests.
He stated that the opposition of the state government to the Bill was only to mislead the people as opposition without any step taken is pointless.
“We will never recognise and never allow an outsider to be a resident of the state. If the laws do not protect us, we will find out ways and means protect ourselves,” he said.
Passah has reiterated the demand to implement Inner Line Permit (ILP) in the state and to clearly define the cut-off year.
