Cops arrest 13 in EJH coal mine raids

SHILLONG: East Jaintia Hills district administration continued its crackdown on illegal coal mines and arrested several miners on Tuesday.
At about 11 am, the magistrate along with police conducted raids in Dkhiah West area and apprehended three persons — Abdul Hussain Barbhuya, Sahabaj Alam Barbhuya and Nassimuddin — while they were extracting coal, in violation of the NGT order.
On the same day, police apprehended five persons, while they were draining water from a coal quarry in Umshong area. Police also seized one water pump, 170 gelatin sticks and 160 detonators.
In a raid in Jalaphet Lad-Kyrluh area police detected one fresh coal quarry in operation and also apprehended the Sordar of the coal mine, Nazarul Islam.
The owners of the coal quarry are Tillerson Syad and Enjoywell Syad while one Aiban Bareh is the manager.
Police later apprehended four persons — Pradip Lama, Binod Gurung, Gopal Sherestha and Uben Rai — from a coal quarry at Musniang village and seized a water pump.
