GUWAHATI: One of the most popular singers from Assam, Angarag Papon Mahanta  has voiced  his opposition to  the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, which has been passed in Lok Sabha on January 8 notwithstanding protests in the region.

Reports published a section of local media said the singer (Papon) stated that if the bill was enacted, the colourful culture of the state would be hampered and that the people of Assam could allow to happen.

Papon’s announcement came in the wake of singer and filmmaker Zubeen Garg’s open letter on social media regarding the passing of the contentious bill that has created a storm in the state.

Papon reportedly  supported  singer Zubeen Garg’s open letter posted on Facebook announcing his intention to take  serious steps  to oppose  the Citizenship (Amemdment) Bill, if  sate’s Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal failed to take any step to get it scrapped.

It may be mentioned that  Zubeen Garg on Tuesday threatened to launch an agitation by himself if Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal failed  to take measures to get the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill scrapped within seven days.

Addressing the chief minister as “Sarbada”, the singer said, “Even if the Citizenship Bill has been passed in the Lok Sabha, Sarbada can say no to it. Speak and see, rest will be seen later. I am still keeping my cool.”
